In 1891, President Benjamin Harrison established the Yellowstone
Timberland Reserve. Later this became the Shoshone National
Forest, the first in the nation - deriving its name from
the Shoshone Indians who lived in the area.
The Shosone lies in the northwest corner of Wyoming and extends
more than 180 miles from the Montana State line down to
South Pass near Lander. It is bordered by the Custer and
Gallatin National Forest on the west. Located in the lee of the
massive Absaroka, Beartooth and Wind River Mountains, the
Shoshone National Forest provides habitat for a plethora of wildlife.
