The Medicine Bow National Forest dates back to May 22, 1902,
with the establishment of the Medicine Bow Forest Reserve by
President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1929, the former hayden National
Forest along the Continental Divide was added. The Pole
Mountain Unit between Laramie and Cheyenne was formerly a
War Department target and maneuver reservation under joint
administration by the Forest Service and the War Department.
In 1959, the area formerly used by the military was added
to the Medicine Bow National Forest, and in 1961 all military
interests in the Pole Mountain District were terminated.
