The Sheyenne National Grasslands is just one part of the bigger
Dakota National Grasslands. Glaciers covered this area some 10,000 years ago during the
Wisconsin Ice Age. As the glaciers withdrew, they shaped the rollings hills
and deposited great outwash sand plains. The Sheyenne National Grassland area
is characterized by sandy soils, orignally deposited as a delta of an
ancient river as it emptied into glacial Lake Agassiz. Since
that time the wind and rains have shaped the sand into the topography
you see today.
