The Grand Mesa National Forest, located in west-central
Colorado, was established by President Benjamin Harrison
on DEcember 24, 1892. This Forest reserve was the second
to be created in Colorado and the third in the United
States. The present Grand Mesa National Forest is about
540 square miles.
The Grand Mesa, one of the largest flat-top mountains in
the world, rises more than a mile above the converging
valleys of the Colorado and Gun nison Rivers to an elevation
over 11,000 feet. The alpine forest atop the mesa, which
includes Engleman Spruce, Subalpine Fire and Aspen, is a
striking contrast to the Sagebrush and Rabbit Brush of the
valley floors.
