Encompassing 475 square miles in the Sequoia and Inyo National Forests, the Golden Trout Wilderness offers
some of the most diverse terrain in the Sierra Nevada. Deep conifer forests, clear subalpine lakes, high
desert plateaus, sheer escarpments, the wild and scenic Kern River and mile wide open meadows are all found
within its borders. Elevations range from 4,800 feet at the Forks of the Kern to 12,900 feet at Cirque Peak.
The Golden Trout has many miles of trails, and is particularly well suited to stock users.
The South Sierra Wilderness encompasses 93 Square miles. The eastern portion lies along the rugged Sierra crest,
while the western portion consists of gently sloping country ideal for hiking and riding. The terrain is mostly
granitic in orgin, with some volcanic features. Fragile meadowlands, diverse flora and fauna between forested
ridges, rolling hills, and steep peaks are typical. Elevations range from 6,100 feet near Kennedy Meadows to
12,123 feet at Olancha Peak.
