The sight of fleeting whitetailed deer, sound of a gobbling
turkey, odor from a sizzling campfire are commonly experienced
by visitors to the Oakmulgee District of the Talladega National
Forest.
Located on 156,000 acres in Bibb, Hales, Perry, Dallas, Chilton
and Tuscaloosa counties in west-central Alabama, the Oakmulgee is
home to Payne Lake Recreation Area, Oakmulgee Wildlife Management
Area, and more than 130 families of the red-cockaded woodpecker -
an endangered species.
